The Restorative CommUnity Coalition has been advocating, educating and delivering services to people in our community affected by an arrest since 2006. We have worked to educate the public about this massive drain on our local economy - the jail and justice system. It is absolutely time to 'get a refund' from the destructive school-to-jail-to prison economic recycling system.
Yes, the police are part of the problem, but the jail system is too, as is the bloating in the courts. It is not necessarily their fault individually. They are part of the symptoms of the overall decay and corrosion of power and structural racism. The question is not only how to defund the police, but more importantly, how do we use our funds more effectively to provide for the public's real safety, not just building "public safety" buildings that contribute to public harm?
1/3 of our population has been arrested at some point - some correctly, but many for reasons that feed jail profiteers and government business interests. Roughly 50% of households are currently dealing with the aftereffects of an arrest in their family circle. Somewhere nearby, a friend is experiencing stress of a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, uncle, aunt, neice, nephew or cousin dealing with the justice system. And they might not feel safe to mention it.
Our community is suffering with the added stress of the shut down, Covid-19 social disruption, a jobs crisis, with no relief in sight. Lives are being disrupted in ways that are similar to justice system involved life events. In June it was reported that 47.5% of our 18-34 year olds are dealing with depression and anxiety. There is an increase in suicidality. Complex Post Traumatic Stress is real. The pressure is building. We have never been here before.
America is in a mess. People need toolboxes and effective support services that we can use in community. We have developed tools to help people cope. We need funding to increase our capacity.
